First and foremost, never bring home anyone who makes you uncomfortable.

Single ladies and gentlemen out there may find themselves taking home a new “friend” after a night out at the bars. While the occasional random hookup is nothing unusual, there are some measures that you must take in order to play it safe.

First and foremost, never bring home anyone who makes you uncomfortable. Even the nicest guy or gal at the bar may not be who they seem, so it’s best to have plenty of conversation before you make the move homeward. Additionally, be sure your friends know that you are leaving with someone, and always have emergency contact numbers at the ready.

Speaking of safety, you need to make sure you are prepared to have a safe sexual encounter, if things go that way. Protecting yourself from sexually transmitted infections is wise, but the importance of safe sex is even greater when you aren’t familiar with your partner’s sexual history.

Additionally, talking honestly about sex with your soon-to-be partner is a good idea. This will ensure that both of you are on the same page. Set up clearly defined boundaries so that both of you get what you want and neither of you do anything you dislike.

After the hook up, it may be slightly awkward if you want your partner to leave – or if they want to hightail it and you prefer they’d stay. The best bet is to try and minimize drama. If you would like some alone time, tell them in a straightforward and friendly manner. If you’d prefer they stick around for some post-coital cuddling, make them feel welcome, but don’t be offended if they decide to move on.
